IHM stands for Inventory of Hazardous Materials. It is a mandatory inventory that identifies and tracks hazardous materials present on board a vessel throughout its operational life. The IHM supports safe vessel operation, protects the health of crew members and contractors, and ensures compliance with international regulations such as the Hong Kong Convention and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation.

Effective hazardous materials management goes beyond maintaining an inventory. It requires accurate documentation, traceability and ongoing control throughout the lifecycle of a vessel.
With MXSuite, hazardous materials can be managed through:
- Document management by linking Material Declarations (MDs) and Supplier Declarations of Conformity (SDoCs) directly to parts.
- Purchasing by identifying hazardous materials before they are brought onboard.
- Certificate management by tracking the lifecycle and compliance status of hazardous materials and safety-related items.
- Safe disposal by recording and documenting the removal or scrapping of hazardous materials in line with environmental regulations.
An IHM covers two main categories of hazardous materials.
Structure and equipment materials, including:
- Asbestos
- Ozone-depleting substances (ODS)
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
- Anti-fouling systems
- Heavy metals
- Flame retardants
- Radioactive substances
Operational wastes and stores, including:
- Waste chemicals
- Residues and oils
- Refrigerants
Keeping these materials properly documented helps ensure regulatory compliance and simplifies inspections, surveys and future recycling processes.
In general, ships of 500 GT and above operating in international waters are required to maintain an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM). This requirement applies under international and European legislation, although specific regulations may vary depending on the vessel’s flag and area of operation.
Certain vessel types, such as naval vessels and domestic ships operating exclusively within national waters, are generally exempt from these requirements.
